New video I have made. I was interested in seeing how women have changed, and how the portrayal of women has changed throughout the last 50 years. So I did some research and made this video, which gives sort of a timeline of the development of women on TV, particularly in the US. Its interesting to see how it starts off with a show from the 50s, the hilarious I love lucy – which wouldn’t even say the word ‘pregnant’ for fear of offending anyone (despite Lucy being pregnant on the show!), and ends with a show solely about the explorations of single women, and their sexualities. In between there were the shows that pioneered the image that women aren’t precious, fragile little flowers but rather strong, independent and intelligent, and able to do anything that want to. The 70s era gave birth to that image with all the female led action shows like wonder woman and (my favourite) charlie’s angels. Apparently the Charlie’s Angels concept was laughed at by every network, calling it ridiculous. Thank goodness Aaron Spelling had the tenacity and the presence of mind to fight for it, giving the men ‘jiggle TV’ (LOL) and the women and girls, strong positive role models. Jill (Farrah Fawcett) left to be a race car driver, the Angels even infiltrated the Army and they fought and caught criminal after criminal. They may have not wore that best brassier’s in the world – if at all, but their glamorous nature (many of the fashions are back in the UK at the moment) meant you could still be a beautiful woman, and that you didn’t lose any of that femininity by fighting crime and doing the things that the general population deemed inappropriate or impossible. And that’s why its a great show that will always have a special place in my heart.

Its interesting that all the shows on today, we take for granted. It was not that long ago that women were wholly repressed. It’s only 93 years ago that women were allowed to vote in the UK. Its hard to believe that was not that long ago. So in that respect women have come a long way in a short time.

Anyway, watch the video, and let me know what you think. Its obviously not as full a picture as I’d like, but it had to be under 15 mins! Also, I apologize for the music – I did have all the clips and opening credits original sound and music in the video but had to change it because of stupid copyright. Hopefully it doesn’t take away too much from the video or the overall message. Enjoy!
